The
Hotel Le Due Fontane is located in the centre
of Italy's fascinating Renaissance capital and many of the
most famous sights are within short walking distance. From
Il Duomo to Palazzo Medici, from
Piazza della Signoria to the Ponte Vecchio, Florence will
enchant all visitors.
Situated in the celebrated Piazza
della Santissima Annunziata, in the historical centre,
Le Due Fontane guests are assured to be fully immersed in
art, culture and history. La Piazza della Santissima
Annunziata takes its name from the church which was
first built in 1250.
Via dei Servi links the piazza to Il
Duomo, the most outstanding sight in Florence. Designed
by Brunelleschi, the cathedral is noticeable
by its polychrome marble exterior.
Another notable building in Piazza
della Santissima Annunziata is L’Ospedale
degli Innocenti (Hospital of the Innocent). This
was the first European orphanage and was one of the first
buildings built in the Renaissance style. It was built in
1419 by none other than the famous architect Filippo
Brunelleschi, mentioned above. The numerous cloisters,
porticos, refectories and dormitories are of particular interest.
An interesting detail is an inscription above a small closed
window to the left of the portico (the arched
porch). It is there as a reminder of the “wheel”,
which worked until 1875, where mothers tragically placed their
babies when they were unable to bring them up themselves.
At the centre of the piazza there is a
statue of Grand Duke Ferdinand I by Giambologna,
also known as Giovanni da Bologna. One of the greatest Renaissance
sculptors, Giovanni da Bologna is most well known for his
marble and bronze statues, in particular his Rape
of the Sabine women. A copy of the sculpture can
be seen in the Loggia dei Lanzi in the centre
of the city.
